Guru Stuthi | Acharya Vandanam Lyrics With Full Meanings - Hindi | English | Telugu Version

Before starting the daily puja or any kind of special worship, it is customary to offer respect to the teachers, preachers, and saints of your family creed. This is known as the Guru Stuthi and Acharya Vandanam while starting a puja.

This Guru Stuthi is done after Ganesh stuthi or even before that depending upon the practices prevalent in your family traditions and faith.

I am giving here my own experience or methods of offering prayer. In our Vaishnava sampradaya, we respect our acharyas from the oldest to the most recent ones chronologically. But, first of all, we offer pranams to our mother and father within our mind. Then do the Guru Stuti.

The acharya vandanam order provided below is in all three languages of Sanskrit, Telugu, and English with their full meanings in the English language at the end.

So, first, let me start with the Sanskrit/ Hindi version of the lyrics and, after that, the Telugu version and the English version.

Meanings & Explanation for Hymns of Guru Stuthi

1) The first verse pays respect to MaNavaaLa maamuni also known as  MaNavaaLa MaamunigaL who is a great sage. He took birth to complete the work that is left behind by Sri Ramanujacharya, who lived only for 120 years instead of 200 years. So, MaNavaLa took birth and completed all those works of spreading illumination to people.

It is believed that this verse was rendered by Lord Sri Ranganatha Swamy himself in appreciation of the deep knowledge and contributions made to the bhakti Sahitya (devotional literature) by ManavaaLa MaamunigaL.

Sri sailEsha refers to his Guru or Acharya, Thiruvai Mozhi Pillai. He was a resident of Srisailam. Lord says that Manavala Mamuni is the possessor of Thiruvai Mozhi Pillai's grace. But, this can be interpreted as being equally true for Lord Srisaila Himself, ie., Ranganatha Swamy Himself. Manavala Mamuni obtained the grace of God Sri Ranganatha Swamy, who came in the form of a small child and accepted  Manavala Mamuni as his own teacher or Acharya and rendered this taniyan or verse praising his greatness that Manavala Mamuni himself is SrisailEsha dayapatran meaning that he has the grace of his teacher or Guru, Thiruvai Mozhi Pillai (and God's own grace).

It is further said that Manavala muni has the qualities of wisdom and devotion ( dhibhaktyaadi gunaarnavam).

Further, it is stated that he is the 'yatindra pravana' meaning that he has an unparallel attachment to the yatindrar ie., Sri Ramanuja Achariyar. MaNavaaLa is closely attached to Ramanujacharya.

So, God in the form of a child says that He is bowing to such a great Ramyajamatru muni (Vande means bowing to). Ramyajamatru muni is another name of Manavala Mamuni.

So, through this verse, God has established the greatness of Manavala Mamuni and instructed all people to render this verse at the starting of all worships to Him.

2) The second hymn offers credits and respect starting from God, considered the foremost teacher or Acharya, and till your present teacher.

It is an established belief that God offered the first mantra to Badari Narayana and then, in the Vishnu form, to Goddess Lakshmi.

In the chain of Acharyas come many great teachers chronologically after God and up to our present Guru.

So in the second sloka, we are offering respects to all our teachers starting with "Lakshminatha samaarambhaam" meaning starting with God who is Lakshmi Devi husband and in the middle of teachers come the names of "Naatha muni and Yaamuna muni" (madhyamam means in the middle order); And up to our present teachers ("asmad aacharya paryantaam" means up to our present teacher).

"Vande guru paramparaam" means - I bow to all these teachers' lineage. So, we are bowing to all the lineage of gurus starting from God and with Naatha muni and Yaamuna muni in the middle order and up to until our present teacher.

3) Then comes our most respectable Ramanujacharya, who is the founder guru of the "Srivaishnavism" way of living that has been preached by him for our salvation; which we are following now.

This third verse says that the great preacher, who always considered God's lotus feet only as his most lovable and dearest asset, and thereby rejected everything else as some useless grass, that great person is our teacher who is an ocean of kindness and is equal to God. We are bowing to the feet of that great Ramanujacharya.

4) In the fourth sloka or hymn, we are bowing to the dearest saint Nammalwar, who is the first saint of this Kaliyuga born in the first year of kali yuga and lived only for 32 years doing great service to God and all people. ( It is believed that out of the 12 great saints of Vaishnavism, 5 were born in Dwapara Yuga and the rest in kali yuga).

Nammalwar is considered to be nearest to God in the Acharya parampara tree-line. Sriman Narayana is first, then Goddess Lakshmi, then again God in the form of Vishwaksena or Badari Narayan and then, the next place is given to Nammalwar.

The hymn says that we bow to the feet of Nammalwar, which smell with beautiful odours of the flower known as 'pogada puvvu'; which feet bestow us with the sweet love of mother and father, which help us in crossing these worldly sins and attachments just like a son leads us to heaven by performing rituals; and which feet provide us all the heavenly pleasures of happiness and even to our future generations also.

We bow our head to such blessed feet of Nammalwar.

5) Now, in the last hymn, we are paying our respects to all the 12 alwars or saints (known as yogi-s in Sanskrit language) of vaishnava sampradayam chronologically- Bhutha yogi or pudatta alwar, Saro yogi or poygai alwar, Maha yogi or Peyalwar, (mahadahvaya refers to Maha yogi), Bhattanatha yogi or Periya alwar, Sri refers to Andal saintess, then Bhaktisara yogi or Thirumazhi Sayya alwar, Kulasekhara alwar, Yogivahan refers to Tiruppan alwar, Bhaktanghrirenu refers to Thondarappodi alwar, then Parakala muni or Thirumanghai alwar, Yatindra refers to Ramanujachariyar, mishran refers to Mishra Kavi or Madhura Kavi alwar and lastly Parankusha muni refers to Nammalwar. So we are bowing our heads to all these great saints daily ( pranatosmi nityam means I am bowing with respect daily).

It is considered in this hymn that Nammalwar is the central body, and all others as the other parts and limbs of the body.

So, this is the importance of chanting all these hymns and verses or slokas before starting the daily prayer. We remember all those great saints and teachers including God and pay respects to them and then start the worship.

How to worship, I have already described in my other blog at this Link.

The Controversial BBC Documentary - "India's Daughter" - What needs to be Done?

The film produced by BBC with Director Leslee Udwin's sensational documentation of the December 16 rape incident at Delhi that has been aired two days back and watched by millions of people all over the world has become a hot topic in all corners - some of them condemning the documentation whereas others supporting the film as an eye opener; with a few remaining indifferent.

There's much debate regarding the naming of the document also. Some say the title of the film should not be "India's Daughter", it should have been named "India's Rapist" as it presents the views of a rapist. They are of the fear that the views of that rapist and of the two lawyers fighting for the accused rapists may be assumed by the world as the views of the common Indian and thereby India's image may get tarnished.

Permission to Film a Document on December 16 Rape Incident

It is quite astonishing to note that this documentary has been on cards since more than two years back when the permission to film it and a no objection letter was issued to the Tihar Jail authorities by the then government. Nothing has been done at that time to prevent its making and now they are raising voices and issuing ban orders to the media and channel operators and the BBC.

Now, they think that it is a shame for India and a shame for our women and so trying to ban the telecast of it. They do not realize the fact that the story of rape has already reached every corner of the world through media immediately after the occurrence of the incident on December 16, 2012. All the damage that has to occur to our image has already occurred within those few days itself. Nothing worst can happen now with the airing of this documentary.

Focus Given on Rapist As if Glorifying His Act

As per media sources, the documentary has been made with a good intention to bring awareness to people by letting them know whatever has occurred on that dark night and how horrible the mentality was, and even now is, of those perverted culprits. It reveals to us how heinous was their mentality, culture, and the thinking attitude.

Even though I have not viewed the video, I have gone through the media reports and comments of the viewers of that film on Youtube and other news feeds, and can see that most of them are not seeing anything objectionable in it, except the fact that the convict has been given voice and importance even after committing such a heinous crime.

Irresponsible and Careless Attitude of Administration

The main point may be why it has been allowed to be made at all. What was the motive of the maker of the documentary? And what was the reason for allowing it to be made? Why the director has been allowed to interview the convict and shoot the video? Whatever happened has happened. You can't revert the action. It should have been thought before giving permission itself.

Now, banning the telecast is not a solution also. It will not prevent the crimes on women or change the attitudes of men by imposing a simple ban on screening it. It may rather turn the whole thing suspicious. The world may begin to think negatively.

Why they are banning it? What is there in it that they want to hide from the public? Is there no freedom of speech or communication in India? And many more doubts will arise.

Bring Change in the Mentality of Perverted People

  • Instead of concentrating our attention on banning of the BBC documentary Nirbhaya, we should try to reform our society and its mental attitude.
  • Take the case of the attitude of this convict. How perverted and degraded are his attitudes? He considers woman as an object and a household thing and as his property. He can do whatever he wants with her and she should concede to him. We should change this kind of attitudes.
  • Take the case of the lawyer. He thinks that a daughter has no freedom to go out of the house in the evenings and late hours. And he has the right even to kill her when she brings shame to him and his family. This thinking should change. The legal mentality needs a purification of the soul and mind.
  • We can not stop an act after it is committed. It needs to be prevented before it gets committed.
  • We need to bring awareness by educating people on morals and ethics and human values.
  • You should try to change the attitude as and when you see a diversion in it.
  • We move among people and with people. We can know their thoughts and actions according to their moves and habits. So, you have plenty of opportunities to guide them towards right directions at the right moment.
  • If a friend or person talks abusively about a woman or girl, immediately correct him and educate him.
  • Teach people to regard all women either as mothers or sisters and nothing less than that. No sexual thought should arise about them. Consider it as a sin.
So, enough is enough.

Let us start from today onwards to follow these lessons and create a beautiful, crime-free, ideal society where man and woman are equal and respect each other.

How to Do Puja or Worship at Home

Puja is the worship of God and involves sixteen services, according to our Vedic texts and shastras. Among these sixteen services, some are repeated (like arghyam, padyam, and achamanam). So, I omit some of those repetitions during my daily worship.

So, here are some simple steps to perform your daily puja at home.

  1. Arghyam: Offering water to the idols’ hands.
  2. Paadyam: Offering water to the idols’ feet.
  3. Snaanam: Pouring or sprinkling water over the idols’ bodies.
  4. Aachamanam: Offering water to God’s mouth three times.
  5. Stotram: Paying obeisance to one’s mother, father, teachers, and the Lord of Obstacles; reciting Vishnu’s 24 names; and chanting basic hymns praising the Almighty God.
  6. Dhoopam: Lighting sandalwood sticks and wafting them around the idols.
  7. Deepam: Using your right hand to show the oil lamps' light to God.
  8. Naivedyam: Offering fruits and food to God.
  9. Aachamanam: Washing God’s hands, mouth, and feet, then offering water to God to drink.
  10. Mangala Haarati: Lighting camphor or showing the lit oil lamps around the Gods while reciting the Mangala haarati slokas.

After performing daily puja for many years, I have shortlisted the procedure above and would now like to share a detailed account of my experiences performing puja at home, following these steps. Any novice can easily follow these tips and personalize the process using these simple suggestions.
For example, you can skip steps that feel inconvenient, such as sprinkling water, wearing silk, or reciting numerous slokas or hymns.

Puja Materials

  • An idol of God/Goddess or Photos/Images
  • Lamp holder (either bronze, steel, or of any metal)
  • Oil for lighting the lights
  • Wicks and Matchbox
  • Flowers (optional)
  • Incense sticks (Agarbatti) and Camphor (camphor is optional)
  • One or two small Metal Pots/vessels and Spoons (preferably copper or silver) filled with water for performing puja.
  • A plate or wide bowl for dropping water into it as if offering to God or washing God's hands and feet. (The water is shown to God and then dropped into the bowl/plate)
  • Naivedyam

Preparations for Starting the Puja

Before starting puja or worshiping God, one must get oneself clean and pure by bathing and wearing pure and clean clothes. This keeps your body and mind cool and well-prepared for meditation.

Dress for Puja

In our Orthodox tradition, a silk dress is often reserved for puja. Afterward, it is stored in a sacred place for future use, so it does not need to be washed daily. It can be washed weekly or dry-cleaned every two weeks or once a month, since it is worn for only about an hour during the daily puja.

If you are not used to wearing silk, do not worry. You can wear any clothes that are washed daily and kept in a clean place, separate from other dresses. Wash them at night before bed and wear them in the morning for puja.

Select a Clean, Good Place for Worship

Remember these guidelines for keeping your place of worship clean:
Keep the area where you place your deity clean. You can set your deity in a peaceful room, preferably in a corner or, if available, in a dedicated puja room. Keep the space tidy by wiping it with a wet or dry cloth or using a small broom reserved for this purpose. Ideally, place your deity facing East or North, and sit to the deity’s right for ease of worship. If your home’s layout makes this difficult, simply explain the situation to God and place the deity wherever it is convenient.

How to Perform  Daily Puja at Home

  • Clean the place of worship before beginning Puja. The idols may be cleaned periodically.
  • Sit beside the place of God on a wooden plank or mat, but not directly in front of Him.
  • Sprinkle a few drops of water around the place of Puja and on the puja materials.
  • Before worship, light an oil lamp, or deepam, according to Hindu customs. Lamps are generally made of brass or panchaloha metal. Keep them simple and small to prevent smoke. Wash and clean them about once a week to keep them neat.
  • Change the cotton vattulu (or wicks) daily, and fill the lamp holder with oil to no more than 60% capacity to prevent spilling or overflowing. Then light it with a matchstick.
  • You may place two lamps on either side of God.
  • If you light a single lamp, combine two wicks into one. The combined wick represents a family or the bond between a man and a woman. This is believed to bring harmony and happiness to the family.
  • After lighting the lamps, sprinkle water over the idols as if bathing the Gods. Puja resembles the daily activities of your own life: getting up early, washing and bathing, wearing new clothes, and then eating. In the same way, you wash God's hands, legs, and body, dress Him (offer a flower instead of clothes), and offer prayers and food.
  • Keep a separate glass or small vessel of water and an empty plate/bowl nearby. Use a small copper or metal spoon, a mango leaf, or a flower to offer water to God, then drop it into the plate to symbolize a bath. Instead of clothes, you can offer flowers as if dressing God.
  • After bathing the idols and placing one or two flowers, chant or recite hymns and slokas (for Lord Ganesha, Lakshmi, Vishnu, Parvati, and Shiva. First of all, recite the guru stuthi, paying respects to your mother, father, and the teachers in your family lineage. Begin by offering salutations to your mother, then father, and the guru of your oldest ancestors, and end with your present guru.
  • Recite the 24 Keshava Namas in order, followed by the Vishnu Stuti and Lakshmi Stuti slokas.

  • Then, recite hymns and slokas in praise of God, known as stothram. Read or recite as many as your available time and family traditions allow. Puja books are available at shops selling puja materials. Or, you can recite/ copy down from my articles (available by clicking the Faith/Festivals button at the top of my Blog).
  • If you can afford it, you may also worship with flowers.
  • After completing the worship and prayers, light the incense sticks and wave them before your Gods.
  • Then, with your right hand, wave the lamps’ light before God.
  • Now, offer food and fruits by holding them in your right hand before God's mouth, as if feeding Him.
  • Finally, light the camphor and recite aarti lines or songs.
  • Your puja is now complete. You can take the prasadam and offer it to your family members as well.
  • Those who chant the Gayatri mantra daily will first perform the Gayatri puja while standing or sitting facing the Sun, and then begin the puja.

Benefits of Doing Puja or Worship

You may ask about the benefits of performing puja. My answer is that it brings us happiness and satisfaction.

Performing puja brings us happiness and peace of mind. It gives us a sense of satisfaction, relief, and joy. It is like meditation: for a while, we free our minds from tension and experience tranquillity and peace.

It can improve your health and brainpower, helping you concentrate. This brings happiness and can lead to success in all your endeavors. You can face and solve your problems peacefully.
So, performing puja is always good for your life.

Superman Returns - "Arvind Kejriwal" of Delhi

Wow, Arvind Kejriwal!!!
What a great miracle! You have done it once again. You proved to the world that you are a great miracle in yourself. You are the Hero of Delhi...their Heart...Their Superman!!!

Emerging with a thumping majority of 67 out of 70 is not an ordinary task. It is possible only for a  Superman like you. It shows how dearer you are to the Delhites. The entire Delhi wants you to lead them. The 3 seats you missed may have gone only because of some hesitation or the state of the indecisiveness of some of the people. So it is clearly 100% vote for you. So, the entire Delhi stands for you - one and only you "Arvind Kejriwal".

Now it is time for you and your party to perform. You should stand up to the hopes and expectations of the Delhites.

Your thumping return shows how great expectations and hopes they are placing on you. It is a kind of "Superman Returns" to save them from their problems.

They are not disappointed by past incidents that took place during your party's past short regime. They did not lose hope. They decided to give a chance to you and your party to perform and prove.

So, it is time for shedding all those childish attitudes and become more serious. AAP should take it more seriously and strive hard to keep the confidence they have regained from their people. They should think seriously and act with good workable solutions at each and every task.

Delhi people are known for their elite intelligence. They are more capable and intelligent in making decisions. So when they voted Aam Aadmi Party to power, and that too in spite of their failure in their first chance, it means that Delhiites were able to see something special in AAP-  some qualities which are acceptable and good for them and which can lead them to better life.

So, Aam Aadmi Party should do it with even more responsibility and care and should live up to their expectations. They should try to discuss each and every aspect clearly and act with more intelligence and smartness. No silly childish acts anymore. Every act should be an act of a grown up and serious person. They should find out workable solutions for each act and no random responses anymore.

Once they are able to prove that they can do things seriously and prudently, they can win more confidence and support from people. Then, they may try to spread their wings towards other states like Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Kashmir, Assam, Kerala and Tamil Nadu also slowly.

So, perform well and wish you all the best- "Arvind Kejriwal" and AAP.
